Chapter 14
Another hour and a half later, and they were home. As much of home as Kayla and Laurieâs place was going to feel like to Jennifer in the meantime, anyway. She still wasnât sure how her new roomies and old friends would feel about having a cat in their place, but that was yet another bridge that she was determined to cross only when she got there. And until then, she had bigger things to think about.
Like Boon, and how lethargic she still was.
âWhere should we put her?â Sara asked. She held the carrier in front of her and carefully wiped her boots before removing them by the front door. She was also busy working off her scarf and coat with the other hand. âIt is probably best we just put the carrier in the room or close to the bed she will have, so that she can come out on her own.â
âUm. Right. A bed.â Jennifer dragged her fingers through her hair. She had no cat supplies, no cat bed, and barely enough food to sustain this adventure more than four days. What had she been thinking?
Again, she tried not to dwell. She didnât need an actual cat bed. She could just take one of the spare pillows from her room and set it out for the cat. She gestured to the room by the front hall with one hand. âThatâs where Iâm staying, so maybe we can put her there for now?â
âYou might want privacy. Or you both might.â
âBecause sheâs dying?â
âNo,â Sara said, her voice firm.
âBut thatâs what catsâand dogsâdo when theyâre dying, right? They hide. Like in a furnace room. Oh, man. We have one of those. Laurieâs room. We could justâ¦put her there, but I donât want her to die. Andââ
Sara stepped forward and grabbed Jenniferâs arm again. She stared at her with a firm, tight expression. One that was commanding, one that Jennifer hadnât seen until the pawn shop, and now, tonight. One that she really needed. The moment Jenniferâs breathing seemed to get back on an even track, Saraâs face softened. She slipped her hand from Jenniferâs arms and linked their fingers again.
âLetâs put her in the living room. She can decide where she wants to go from there. Weâll move the food close, and then, in the morning, we can make a better decision. Okay?â
Jennifer nodded. She moved to go and get the food, set it up as Sara said, but she still held tight to her arm. âOkay?â Sara asked. âI want to hear you say it.â
âOkay.â
Sara let go with a nod. She put the cat in the living room while Jennifer set up the food. They opened the door of the carrier and then waited. Nothing happened. Boon was still there, still breathing, but also wheezing and whining a bit. âOh, no,â Jennifer said. âI canât wait until morning.â
âYou can. Itâs just the longest night of the year. Sheâs better off now than she was before, okay?â
âYesâ¦â
âYes,â Sara affirmed. âCome. Sit with me?â
Sara reached out her hand.
